This course introduces the history of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector from a comparative perspective. The course demonstrates how the events of the past provide important context for understanding contemporary philanthropy, encompassing charity, reform, foundations, nonprofit organizations, voluntary associations, and individual actors. This course immerses participants into the discussion of how the contemporary definitions and discussions of philanthropy limit our understanding of philanthropy by examining theological and cultural sources to point towards a broader conception of philanthropy. This course will also cover the current trends in philanthropy, the rise of collaborative funding, the challenges of racial equity and social justice within philanthropy.

This course is a guide for participants to develop and improve their leadership skills. It draws on universal leadership principles and is applicable to anyone looking to become a better leader. This course will introduce participants to different types of leadership including, but not limited to servant leadership, transformational leadership, and authentic leadership.
Management and leadership can be entwined but are essentially distinct. Through effective volunteer and project management, nonprofit organizations can build a more strategic, positive experience and cultivate long-term programs. This course will provide an overview of project and volunteer management. Participants in this course will learn insights about volunteer trends, volunteer motivation, volunteer integration, and how to manage volunteer relationships. Participants will also learn project management fundamentals and actionable strategies that can help any nonprofit successfully plan and deliver projects.
